Give $1000 To Charity Without Putting Your Hand In Your Pocket!

Ever wish you could do more for charity? Maybe you’re too busy, too lazy, or too poor?

Well, I’m going to give you the opportunity to donate a fairly substantial wad of cash, to a very worthy charitable cause, for doing nothing but giving a few moments of your time, ideas, and opinions.

How?

Well, Design Vitality are hosting a WordPress Theme Design Competition with a top prize of $1000 for the winner, and if I win, I’m going to give every penny to charity.

Because the competition will depend upon public voting, I need the publics ideas. I need you to answer questions like these:

  • Should the theme have one sidebar, or two?
  • Should the theme be narrow or wide?
  • Should it be minimal, or graphical?
  • Dark or light?
  • Have a place for photo/image in the header?
  • Should it be optimised for Adsense ads?
  • Should it be optimised for ads in general?

The closing date for entering, is 30th of November, so I need all the ideas to come in asap.

Other ways you can help…

If you’re a WordPress user, is there something all WordPress themes are missing, that you’d like to see? Tell me. Have you seen something done on one theme, and you’d like it to be duplicated/improved? Tell me.

If you’d like to take a look at any of the following web design galleries, and pick out features from some of the worlds best designs, and pass them on to me, I’d greatly appreciate it:

Last words…

Give this some thought, (and publicity), if you can. If I win, the $1000 will go to the Northern Ireland Childrens Hospice. I have an indirect connection with this charity, and beyond shadow of doubt, they are a worthy cause.

Competition could be fierce for this, so I’d appreciate all the help I can get Northern Irish families, with children who possess life-limiting illnesses, and conditions, will appreciate all that you can do to help.

We can win this!

That’s very kind of you to donate the winning cash like that! I wish I could win at least runner up for that iPhone (or Wii)! Haha! :D

I think you could look at the Sandbox Designs Competition at sndbx.org—the entries, the comments, and the winners. I think the winner will be something that caters to a wide audience and has lots of attention to detail. And since plugin support is allowed, I think that will be the deciding factor in the end.

ia - I think it’s the least we can do. I could do plenty with $1000, because I’m not exactly rich. However, I’ve got everything I need, and there are charities like the NICH which go the second mile in helping and supporting families in need.

I actually thought about the Sandbox competition. However, I was quite surprised at the eventual winner. But there’s a major difference between it, and this as this is a public vote. The Sandbox comp was judged by a panel.

If I get either of the runner-up prizes, I’ll sell them and give the cash away. I don’t have time for a Wii, and I don’t have need of an iPhone (at present).

Great cause, Armen, and here are my answers:

    * Should the theme have one sidebar, or two?

    2

    * Should the theme be narrow or wide?

    wide

    * Should it be minimal, or graphical?

    minimal

    * Dark or light?

    light

    * Have a place for photo/image in the header?

    yes

    * Should it be optimised for Adsense ads?

    no

    * Should it be optimised for ads in general?

    perhaps one sidebar slightly wider?

Best of luck with it mate. I’m sure that whether you win or not, the theme you design will be a popular one.

As a Northern Irish person i think it’s really admirable that should you win the money will be donated to a charity based in Northern Ireland. Its a fantastic charity, i will soon be launching a new design and blog and will do my bit to publicize this!

David - Thanks for the contribution my friend. I’m getting a picture for the look. In fact, I might sketch something, and then shoot it over to you to have a look :)

Grace - I’ve been seeing your name pop up everywhere these days. It seems a long time ago when we were sitting in Art class under Mr. McCready!

Thanks in advance. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

i have a question too, will you give the winner theme free download?

    thanks to make it

Nice - Thanks for the feedback :)

Ket - The theme will be free to download, don’t worry. That’s in the competition rules.

There’re many great minimal themes already. I think it’s harder to make minimal theme “stand out”

Most sites in those CSS galleries are graphical too, the graphics make them unique.

Nice - I know what you mean. We’ll see what develops. ;)

    Here goes…

    * Should the theme have one sidebar, or two?…no preference (I know this isn’t much help, but it’s true)

    * Should the theme be narrow or wide?…I like wide

    * Should it be minimal, or graphical?…Minimal

    * Dark or light?…Light

    * Have a place for photo/image in the header?…Yes

    * Should it be optimized for Adsense ads?…Not sure, depends on the purpose of the site

    * Should it be optimized for ads in general?…again, see previous answer.

Hope you do well, I’ll be following this!

    Grace - Yeah, it’s me! :)

If you’re serious about ‘making it’, get your name out there, and brand yourself.

Glenn - Thanks Glenn. 958px is pretty wide, but, still is accommodated by the most commonly used screen sizes without horizontal scrolling :)

The rest of your comments are verifying my initial picture after David A. left his suggestions. I’m pretty sure I know where I’m going with this.
