One Day Blog Silence - 30th April 2007

I need not go into detail about what happened yesterday in America. It has shocked the world. In response, someone has come up with the idea on having a ‘Blogosphere Day of Silence’.

On the website it states,

Silence can say more then a thousand words.

This day shall unite us all about this unbelievable painful & shocking event and show some respect and love to those who lost their loved ones.

On April 30th 2007, the Blogosphere will hold a One-Day Blog Silence in honor of the victims at Virginia Tech.  More then 30 died at the US college massacre.

But it

I couldn’t agree with you more. While the shootings were horrible, what about the thousands of women and children who are raped and killed in Africa every year?

As an American, I am ashamed that no one in my country seems to care about an issue unless it’s televised….

I will not be participating in this. If I don’t happen to blog that day, it’s because I didn’t have anything to write about.

I agree with you and the above commenter (Saman) that there are many other tragedies that are overlooked. It is horrible that this particular tragedy did occur and I will honor the victims in my own way. However, this will not be done through my blog.

Saman and Ronald - While I’m not sure, I want to be careful as to how I approach this. It’s a sensitive subject. However, I wonder how many Americans on the 24th of April, will remember the 1.5 million slaughtered during the Armenian Genocide??

That’s exactly my point: Americans don’t know about an even unless it’s on TV or there is a current movie about it!

But, I have a lot of respect for you and I don’t want to start a flame-war on your site. These are my opinions and if anyone want to, they can leave a comment on my site.

Saman - Maybe some of us could do some research into other trajedies that touch our own hearts? Maybe if everyone in the blogosphere posted about the rememberance days of other events, we could spread knowledge that people will not be presented with in the media?

Then maybe, just maybe, the death of these 32 people (and the murderer), may be used in a way to consider universal trajedies, rather than just (for want of a better word) a local trajedy?

I dunno, maybe my heart and mind is approaching this all wrong. To be honest, I would love to touch the lives of all the families connected with what happened in Virginia. But I’d also love the everyone to have a wider vision. I haven’t heard one reporter mention the family of the South Korean murderer. I’m sure they are even more devastated than anyone else!!

Think about it…they’ll probably have to move home. People will not know what to think of them. I wonder will someone send them flowers and a card? They’ve lost their son, and I would doubt they ever saw this coming. They probably brought him up like any other parent brings up their child. Now they’ll be the object of hatred, and the blame may lie at their door in the eyes of some people.

it is a disgrace that many people die and attention is only brought to people when it is either on the radio or tv but think bout the many many many people are killed that we dont even know bout!!!

I know i wonder wen people are at death’s door, do they actually think bout after life??? it would surprise you how many people don’t. Thinking bout those people who were shot dead there in america at beginning of week, where are their souls now????

That’s a great point, about the murder’s family. I heard one report this morning touch briefly their background . . .

Now if we could get the major media outlets to be silent for a day, perhaps that might be something I could get behind.

If you search Silence Day and Day of Silence (2 different things) on Wikipedia, they give decent explanations as to why silence is used to, ironically, speak out.

For Day of Silence, the question being asked is what you will do to end the problems that cause the silence. For Silence Day, it is observed because people in today’s world use words for hatred rather than for compassion.

I agree that many people have died and are not remembered. Women and children have died. Why not April 30th a day of silence offering respect to everyone who has died from violence?

I’m participating in this because it’s pretty much the only thing I can do. As much as I would want to speak in support of gun laws, I’m under 18 and I’m not an American. Here in Canada I believe we have stricter gun laws than in the U.S. I can tell people what I think but that’s as far as it goes. None of those in power will listen.

Participate in this event or not, I’m sure everyone has good intentions, and wish to pay respect to those who died. I don’t think it’s right to argue about how we should go about doing so.

Joanna - Only God knows. It doesn’t even bare thinking about it to be honest.

Saman - So he had a family then — I was beginning to wonder. Thanks for the linkback too Saman.

Chris - Welcome! Now that would be something. Such a day will be the end of the world I suspect.

2perfect - Welcome, and thank you for an informative comment. However, I hope you don’t think we’re arguing here. I can’t speak for everyone else, but to me this is just constructive dialogue.
I made mention of the Armenian Genocide above. The rememberance of that is April 24th, and for them it will be a day that is far from silent. They will take to the streets (of America anyway) and protest because of the denial of the genocide in so many quarters.

Come the 24th, I may just write about it, although I know very little.

Haven't you got anything to say?
