The Future of Armen’s Blog

As some of you are aware, I made mention of a hope to write some technical, and insightful articles that may be benefical to some other people. In case you haven’t noticed, I get quite a few non-Christian’s to this blog, and for some time I’ve been wondering how to cater for them.

As a Christian, the biggest impact we make is not how we preach Christ, but how we live Christ. With that in mind, I reckon there are ways I could write posts that are not directly related to the Bible itself, and yet promote biblical principles. Understand?

But then there is a problem. How does one divide what I’m doing now (personal), with what I hope to do (blogger related)?

In last weeks Open Blog, this issue was briefly discussed, and in the comments Glenn made the point,

“You could also run two blogs, but then someone interested in your personal info, might miss out on something beneficial in your more technical blog, and vice-versa. mmm, not an easy one.”

This is a problem indeed, and one in which I am not alone in having to come up with a solution. In reply to Glenn’s comment, I said that I didn’t want to have to work on two blogs. However, I also want to divide the personal and blogging related posts some way. But how?

Well, I think I’ve arrived at a solution. There will be one blog, under one all embracing name. Blogging related posts alone will appear on the homepage (www.newname.net), but there will be a link that will say “Personal Section” or something, and by clicking on that, it will present exactly what you see here, the posts on personal life and Christian related issues.

How is this done? There is a way of stopping posts placed in certain categories from being placed on the homepage, but still accessable through the categories. This means, all the posts on my life and church will come under ‘Personal’, exempting them from a position on the homepage.

Are you all still with me? What are your thoughts? I think this is the best solution, but I am welcome to hear more.

For your information, www.armensblog.com will then point to my personal section, which will be something like www.newname.net/personal. This will mean all the visitors unaware of the change, will still find their way here.

Joanna - It’s not that confusing, but maybe visualising it isn’t so easy.

Oh, and I like to compliment my ‘commenters’…your comments are ‘intelligent’ to me :)

Well, it really depend on the scoop of your site: I believe you can run both a “business” and “personal” blog in the same blog. Readers who don’t want to read a religious article can simply move on to the next post!

I know I’ve read about the importance of niece blogging - but I think that comes from a revenue generating perspective. If your reader base grows from what you are doing, then keep doing it!!

Saman - I really appreciate your input. I’m going to try separating the two first. It will still be one blog. However, through a plugin I discovered, I will be able to separate categories.

It may sound confusing to start with, but when I implement it, I think it will make life easier for everyone….hopefully!

My instinct was in agreement with Saman, although I didn’t voice it, because I thought you must be able to visualize what you want, and must therefore want it!
I do agree with Saman, in that, it is very easy to skip a post, that you are not interested in.

    Watching and waiting!

Hmmm…I was speaking to a couple of fairly high-profile bloggers last night on MSN Messenger, and their advice was, if I’m going to write about something else, have another blog.

I don’t know…I really appreciate the input however. Infact, going by the ‘consensus’ I’ve narrowed it down to two options. Either one blog, with no divide, or two blogs.

Haven't you got anything to say?
