Moth Encounter

One of the wonderful aspects of living in Australia has to be the exposure to colourful, diverse, and even often charismatic creatures. Having said that, you do get the odd beastie too.

As we travel long distances through the ‘bush’ late at night, we often catch glimpses of various living creatures. If they’re on the ground we can usually see what they are, even as we travel at 100km/hr or over, such as rabbits and cats. However, the creatures that fly are not so easily distinguishable. Our headlights have caught the underside of many a flying bird (regularly it’s some sort of owl), but oftentimes we catch a brief sight of flying life and we have no clue what it is. Infact, we can’t always even tell if it’s got feathers or not!

What do I mean? Well we have a notion that some of the insects are of mammoth proportions, and now and again we get proof by the sheer volume of [diligently seeks for a euphemism here, but to no avail] guts that are left on the windscreen!

On Tuesday night as we returned from Lock, we had such an experience, only this time we caught the proof. Observe the video below -

(If the video jumps/stutters, press pause and give it a few moments to buffer (catch its breath), then press play again)

After viewing the video, I realised that it just doesn’t do it justice. It’s maybe just as well however, I may have lost some readers!

Armen, I think you say in the video ” it’s quite gross”…..The only thing that is gross, is the way you swerved all over the road to “catch” this fine (but slightly under-the-weather) specimen.
I can’t actually believe you did this !
I thought you liked nature…instead you are setting out to single-handedly wipe out Port Lincolns’ population of invertebrates !
Try to deny it, if you want…tell me this is the first time you have hit an insect with your car…see you can’t!
    I rest my case.

    Glenn - Only you!! :D
Actually, I was probably more referring to the mess it made rather than the actual creature. As I suspected, I found out last night that these get even bigger than this. I think it may be some type of Rain Moth, which can grow very large and you’ll typically come across them (funny enough) when it’s raining, as it was on Tuesday night.

In my defence by the way, I reckon he came after me, not I after him!

Kelsey - No doubt there are bigger out at Polda. However, I don’t think moths will be on my list of ‘worries’ at Polda. I’ll be watching out for Wombats that might be wanting to get revenge after someone trails it out of its den!

Haven't you got anything to say?
